Printer or multifunction device

Printer reset: use the smallest reset that fits.

Clear a stalled print system while preserving network, fax, address-book, and calibration settings whenever possible.

Reset levels in the correct order

Start with the first level that matches the failure. Do not jump to factory reset because a restart did not fix a hardware, account, service, or connection problem.

1
Restart

Restart the printer and clear the queue

Use this for stuck jobs, an unresponsive panel, or a printer that appears offline.

Usually keeps
  • Wi-Fi and Ethernet settings
  • Fax and address-book data
  • Paper and quality presets
May remove
  • Active print jobs after the queue is cleared
  • Temporary error state

Steps

  1. Cancel visible jobs from the printer panel if it responds.
  2. Clear the print queue on the computer or phone.
  3. Turn the printer off with its power button.
  4. Wait 30 seconds, then turn it on and allow startup to finish.
  5. Print an internal status or configuration page before reinstalling drivers.
Stop instead of resetting when:
  • Paper is trapped around a hot fuser area.
  • Ink, toner, or melted material is leaking.
  • The printer makes repeated mechanical grinding sounds.
2
Network reset

Reset only network settings

Use this when USB printing works but Wi-Fi, Ethernet, AirPrint, Mopria, or network discovery fails.

Usually keeps
  • Most print-quality settings
  • Page count
  • Firmware
May remove
  • Saved Wi-Fi networks
  • Static IP and DNS settings
  • Some web-service connections

Steps

  1. Print or photograph the current network configuration page.
  2. Open Network, Wireless, Connectivity, or Restore Network Defaults on the control panel.
  3. Confirm a network-only reset rather than a full factory reset.
  4. Reconnect the printer to the intended network.
  5. Remove and add the printer again on one test device.
3
Factory reset

Use a full reset only after exporting needed data

Use this for an unknown administrator password, corrupted configuration, or persistent control-panel issue after firmware and network checks.

Usually keeps
  • Installed firmware in most cases
  • Hardware page count on many models
May remove
  • Network settings
  • Address books and scan destinations on some models
  • Fax, security, and administrator settings
  • Custom paper and workflow presets

Steps

  1. Export address books, scan destinations, certificates, and configuration backups when the interface allows it.
  2. Record the exact model and regional product number.
  3. Use Restore Factory Defaults from the official control panel or administrator interface.
  4. Complete language, region, paper, network, and security setup.
  5. Install only the required driver or official app on one device before expanding.
Stop instead of resetting when:
  • The device is managed by a workplace or print provider.
  • A maintenance contract controls firmware or configuration.
  • The reset menu requests a service password you do not have.

Before any factory reset

After the reset

  1. Set the correct region, time, and paper size.
  2. Reconnect networking before adding multiple computers.
  3. Print an internal test page.
  4. Re-enable scan destinations and security settings one at a time.
