Smart TV or streaming device

Smart TV reset: use the smallest reset that fits.

Separate an app restart, device power cycle, network reset, and factory reset so accounts, channels, picture settings, and accessibility options are not erased unnecessarily.

Reset levels in the correct order

Start with the first level that matches the failure. Do not jump to factory reset because a restart did not fix a hardware, account, service, or connection problem.

1
Restart

Restart the app or operating system

Use this when one app freezes, buffers, or fails while other apps work.

Usually keeps
  • Signed-in accounts in most cases
  • Picture and sound settings
  • Wi-Fi configuration
May remove
  • Temporary app state

Steps

  1. Exit the affected app completely rather than returning to its home screen.
  2. Open another app to confirm whether the problem is app-specific.
  3. Use Restart in Settings when available.
  4. Reopen the app and test a different title or stream.
2
Power cycle

Perform a real power cycle

Use this for blank screens, frozen menus, HDMI handshake issues, or a remote that wakes the device but cannot control it.

Usually keeps
  • Apps and accounts
  • Network and picture settings
May remove
  • Temporary HDMI, memory, and operating-system state

Steps

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Unplug the TV or streaming device from power for 60 seconds.
  3. Disconnect external HDMI devices only when access is safe.
  4. Reconnect power and start with one source.
  5. Test the home screen before reconnecting extra devices.
Stop instead of resetting when:
  • The TV is wall-mounted and cables cannot be reached safely.
  • There is a burnt smell, clicking power supply, cracked panel, or liquid exposure.
3
Network reset

Reset networking without erasing the TV

Use this when apps cannot connect but menus, HDMI, and offline features still work.

Usually keeps
  • Installed apps
  • Picture and sound settings
  • Most accounts
May remove
  • Saved Wi-Fi details
  • Manual IP and DNS settings

Steps

  1. Test the same service on another device using the same network.
  2. Forget the current Wi-Fi network or choose Reset Network.
  3. Restart the router only if multiple devices are affected.
  4. Reconnect using the correct Wi-Fi band and password.
  5. Check automatic date and time.
4
Factory reset

Factory-reset after documenting settings

Use this for persistent operating-system corruption, repeated app crashes across services, or ownership transfer.

Usually keeps
  • Current firmware on most devices
May remove
  • Accounts and installed apps
  • Wi-Fi details
  • Picture, sound, channel, accessibility, and privacy settings

Steps

  1. Photograph picture, sound, accessibility, antenna, and input-label settings.
  2. Confirm account passwords and two-factor access.
  3. Open System, General, Device Preferences, or Support and choose the full reset option.
  4. Complete initial setup and test built-in apps before reconnecting HDMI equipment.
  5. Restore custom settings gradually.

Before any factory reset

After the reset

  1. Install system updates before many apps.
  2. Test built-in streaming on one network.
  3. Reconnect HDMI sources one at a time.
  4. Re-enable motion, HDR, sound, and accessibility preferences only after basic operation is stable.
